The traffic interchange over the railway tracks was opened in the Vyezdnoye settlement (Arzamassky urban district) in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This is the most popular route among motorists from Arzamas to Diveevo and Sarov.
The existing transport hub with an at-grade railway crossing was congested, failing to provide the necessary capacity. According to the Main Directorate of Motor Roads of the Nizhny Novgorod region, during peak hours, traffic jams of over one and a half kilometers often occurred here. The interchange was opened five months earlier than the deadline specified in the contract.
When opening the bridge, Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin emphasized that traffic on this section has become not only more comfortable but also safer.
“Opening this road is a long-awaited event for the region's residents, tourists, and myself. We have been working towards this for a long time. It all started with a Government decree on developing the ‘Arzamass — Diveevo — Sarov’ cluster. Without decisions made by the cluster’s supervisory board and federal support, we would not have the southern bypass of Arzamas, which was launched in 2023, and the village of Diveevo would not have a northeastern bypass. Now Diveevo is one of the few villages in Russia with bypass routes. The contractor delivered the project five months ahead of schedule, and from today, guests and locals can breathe a sigh of relief, and motorists no longer need to get stuck in traffic,” said Gleb Nikitin.
The manager of the Moscow Patriarchate Affairs Office, Metropolitan Voskresensky Grigory, welcomed those present and sprinkled the new road with holy water.
“Congratulations on the feast day of Saint Seraphim of Sarov. The Nizhny Novgorod region is called the land of this saint. It is in Diveevo, near the relics of Saint Seraphim of Sarov, that people from all over the world come to pray and touch the sacred. Now, with the opening of the overpass, their journey to Diveevo Monastery will be easier. This project was made possible through the creation of the ‘Arzamass — Diveevo — Sarov’ cluster, which was blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’. I thank everyone who worked diligently here. I hope that in the future, the road to Diveevo will continue to improve, attracting more pilgrims. May the Lord protect us, strengthen us in the Orthodox faith, and not leave us without His omnipotent help,” he emphasized.
At the opening of the overpass, Metropolitan Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas also attended.
The length of the new transport interchange is 750 meters, including a 271.8-meter bridge. By the end of 2025, the contractor is to complete work on the adjacent territory. Approximately 35 people work daily on the site, using ten units of equipment. The project was made possible by attracting an infrastructure budget loan. The construction cost is 1.73 billion rubles, of which 1.615 billion rubles come from the federal budget.
“This facility was implemented with the help of federal support funds. It was built with a high level of quality and a thorough technical solution. Such projects actively promote the development of domestic tourism. Nizhny Novgorod region is no exception, where the ‘Arzamass — Diveevo — Sarov’ cluster is becoming a major attraction for tourists and pilgrims, a place of spiritual power,” said Roman Novikov, head of the Federal Road Agency (Rosavtodor), at the opening ceremony.
Arzamas Mayor Alexander Shelokov emphasized that the need to build this overpass had become evident over 15 years ago.
“In the history of Arzamas’s infrastructure development, this is one of the most memorable events—a long-awaited object that originated from the presidential decree, the potential of the pilgrimage and tourist cluster, and the personal participation of the Nizhny Novgorod governor. It solved the problem of traffic congestion at the city and Vyezdnoye junction. Together with the southern bypass and the under-construction Arzamas-1 road, the overpass will reduce traffic load inside and outside the city and will, I am sure, influence the entire transport landscape of the southern region. Of course, special thanks to the road workers, whose work, responsibility, and approach have been exemplary in this project,” said Alexander Shelokov.
The Government of the Nizhny Novgorod region has been systematically developing road infrastructure in the southern part of the region, including Arzamas and Diveevo, for several years. In 2021, the northeastern bypass of Diveevo was opened. In 2023, simultaneously with the M-12 section, traffic was opened for the southern bypass of Arzamas, allowing transit traffic to bypass the city and fully transform its historic center. Construction of the road from Vyezdnoye to Arzamas-1 railway station is ongoing, with completion scheduled for late 2026.
