Incidents
Lower Novgorod police officers, together with colleagues from Tatarstan, detained two young men suspected of stealing money from an 88-year-old resident of Nizhny Novgorod. This was reported by the Nizhny Novgorod Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The operation to apprehend the suspects took place on July 11, 2025, in Kazan. Money, handed over by the elderly woman to the scammers, was found and seized in the vehicle used by the suspects.
According to investigators, one of the detainees is a 19-year-old resident of a neighboring region, who found a work offer online. The employer proposed duties as a courier: picking up money from specified locations and passing it to third parties or transferring it to certain bank accounts. For completing these tasks, scheme participants received 10% of each amount transferred by victims.
The pensioner reported that the day before, an unknown man contacted her, pretending to be an investigator from the Investigative Committee. He informed her that she needed to cancel what was supposedly a transfer of aid to an unfriendly country and declare her cash holdings.
Trusting the caller, the woman gathered her savings, packed them in a shoebox, and, following instructions, handed it over to a courier, placing the box in the trunk of a car waiting outside her house.
A criminal case has been opened against the suspects.
By court order, the 19-year-old suspect has been remanded in custody. His 18-year-old accomplice is under a obligation to appear.
It was previously reported that scammers deceived a Nizhny Novgorod pensioner out of half a million rubles. Additionally, a 21-year-old resident of Zavolzhye, Nizhny Novgorod region, handed almost 2.5 million rubles to online fraudsters in pursuit of profits from supposedly safe investments.
