The completion of restoration work at the Gorodets Dam is expected on July 26.
These deadlines have been set after a comprehensive inspection of the headpiece—a concrete bridge connecting chambers 15 and 16 of the lock. On the morning of July 22, during construction work, it tilted toward the navigable lock, causing vessel passage to be halted for safety reasons. Important: the main chamber is undamaged. The obstacle is scheduled to be completely removed by July 26. After that, Rostekhnadzor will conduct a safety check—filling the chamber with water and running test launches. Then, shipping on the Volga in the Nizhny Novgorod region will resume.
What work has already been completed:
Yesterday, divers examined the submerged part of the emergency headpiece. Simultaneously, specialists dismantled the above-water part, which is now fully cut away.
About 95% of the soil dam has been backfilled, which will allow additional equipment to approach the lock. Work is carried out 24/7.
Specialists are equipped with all necessary materials and equipment to restore navigation as quickly as possible.
Passenger ships:
From July 23 to 25, 14 passenger vessels were scheduled to pass through the canal. According to the Nizhny Novgorod Region Ministry of Tourism, tour operators are developing plans for future travel. Proposed options include transferring passengers to other ships, changing routes, and transporting passengers by land and water to their destinations.
All passenger ships have already altered their routes; some tourists are being transported to their destinations via land. Excursions to regional attractions will also be organized for everyone.
We are working on compensation issues for passengers in cooperation with tour operators and shipping companies.
Cargo ships:
Currently, 57 cargo ships with a total cargo of over 100,000 tons awaiting lockage are on the rafts. Rosmorport is in contact with their captains—resources are sufficient, and all issues are being resolved in working order.
