An accident at the Gorodets Hydro-Plant could seriously impact river tourism, reports nnov.kp.ru.
Let’s remind that as a result of the accident at the Gorodets Hydro-Plant on July 22, navigation on the Volga River between Nizhny Novgorod and Gorodets was suspended. The cause was the collapse of the head during dismantling work, which flooded the under-construction chamber of Lock 15A.
The Association of Tour Operators notes that the Gorodets Hydro-Plant is a key point for cruise shipping between Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and the cities of the Middle Volga. From April to November, over 13,000 ships pass through it, carrying nearly 180,000 passengers.
“The suspension of operations during the peak season could have serious consequences for cruise navigation,” the association stated.
According to the department, route changes involving passage through the Gorodets Hydro-Plant have so far affected only those cruises that have already started.
According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, at the time of the accident, 10 passenger ships with 1,500 tourists onboard were waiting for the lock. An additional 14 ships were scheduled to pass through the hydro-plant from July 23 to 25. For other departures scheduled for late July and August, information will be published after the damaged section is inspected and an official conclusion from Rosmorrybflot is obtained.
Additionally, extensive reconstruction is underway at the hydro-plant as part of the federal project “Development of Maritime and Inland Water Transport Infrastructure.” This will ensure a depth of 4 meters and increase throughput capacity of the section. The project started in May 2023.
It was also reported that the Nizhny Novgorod Transport Prosecutor's Office has stepped up monitoring of cruise companies due to temporary vessel movement restrictions through the Gorodets Hydro-Plant.
