Incidents In Nizhny Novgorod, a 76-year-old woman became a victim of phone scammers who, posing as police officers and representatives of a telecommunications company, extorted half a million rubles from her.
According to the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Nizhny Novgorod, unknown individuals called the elderly woman on a landline phone. Initially, they pretended to be communication service employees, then — police officers. Under the pretext of canceling a suspicious banking operation and the need to declare her savings, the scammers convinced the woman to gather all her money.
Trusting the scammers, the pensioner placed 500,000 rubles in a shoebox and handed it over to a courier, leaving the package on the passenger seat of a car that arrived at her home.
A criminal case has been opened under Part 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — "Fraud." The investigation continues, and police are working to identify those involved in the crime.
Law enforcement reminds: when receiving calls from strangers, especially if it concerns alleged unauthorized withdrawals from an account, it is necessary to contact the bank directly to verify the information. Do not disclose personal data about bank cards, accounts, or valuables to outsiders. In case of suspicious calls, it is recommended to immediately end the conversation and not follow any instructions from unknown individuals. If scammers have achieved their goal, it is important to contact the nearest police station as soon as possible.
It was previously reported that a 21-year-old woman from Zavolzhye lost nearly 2.5 million rubles to internet scammers in an attempt to earn money through supposedly safe investments.
