The water curtain will help combat unpleasant odors in Nizhny Novgorod.

      The Nizhny Novgorod authorities are implementing a comprehensive approach to combat the odor problem.

      A set of measures has been introduced in Nizhny Novgorod to eliminate the unpleasant smells that have been bothering residents of various districts in recent months, according to the city administration's press service.

      Among the main sources of odors, experts identified unauthorized discharges of liquid domestic waste, including from industrial enterprises.

      One of the strategies will be to strengthen control over so-called "black" vacuum truck operators, that is, owners of vehicles that drain waste bypassing treatment facilities.

      Early results have already been achieved during patrols, and work will continue.

      By order of Mayor Yuri Shalabaev, the city will establish a network of specialized sites for accepting liquid domestic waste (LDW) with enhanced control of its composition.

      Measures have also been taken to close abandoned wells and to check the operation of sewage pumping stations.

      Daily air monitoring near the wastewater treatment stations is carried out using new ultra-sensitive gas analyzers recently purchased by MKU "Gorkomekology".

      At the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station, a water curtain will be created within the next two weeks to minimize odor dispersion.

      Earlier, the Water Utility denied the station’s involvement in residents’ complaints; however, the city clarified that hydrogen sulfide odors might occur near the facility during reconstruction under certain weather conditions.

      To minimize risks, sludge fields have already been treated with a special compound.
