The Ministry of Ecology cited the reasons for the odorous smell in Nizhny Novgorod

      Society: Nizhny Novgorod residents and regional inhabitants continue to complain about an unpleasant odor in various districts. Experts from the interdepartmental working group conducted a comprehensive inspection of the odor sources, reported the Ministry of Ecology of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

      Since June 19, specialists have been working around the clock. The routes of the mobile laboratory of the State Budgetary Institution "Regional Ecology" and the duty emergency response teams were quickly adjusted based on citizen reports. Data from ecological posts and small monitoring stations were also used. Wind directions and fluctuations in pollutant concentrations were considered during analysis. This allowed for a more accurate identification of possible odor sources.

      The investigation showed that numerous factors influence the appearance of the unpleasant smell, and these may vary in each district. Among the main causes are unauthorized discharges into the sewer system, including both industrial enterprises and illegal discharges from cesspool trucks.

      Problems in the state of communal infrastructure and features of technological processes at the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station were also identified.

      Following the analysis, together with regional ministries of ecology and housing and communal services, the municipality and Nizhny Novgorod Vodokanal developed an action plan to combat the odors. The program includes short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures.

      The municipality has been tasked with implementing the proposed solutions to reduce air pollution and prevent the recurrence of odors in the future.

      It was previously reported that Nizhny Novgorod authorities conduct raids to identify illegal cesspool operators.
