Society "Rostelecom" has added a new authentication option for public Wi-Fi platforms across Russia — users can now connect to publicly accessible wireless internet using Bank ID. This method is available to Sber ID and Alfa ID holders. The solution simplifies the connection process and meets modern security requirements and legislation. The functionality is implemented with support from SberBank and Alfa-Bank.
To authenticate, select the login button on the connection page, then, depending on the chosen bank, the system will authenticate the user. In the case of Sber ID, the account is accessible without a Sber account or card. The new authentication methods apply to Wi-Fi zones nationwide, with availability depending on technical capabilities.
According to legislation, public Wi-Fi network operators must ensure user identification to prevent illegal activities and to ensure internet connection security. The use of Bank IDs fully complies with these requirements: they provide a reliable method of identification, minimizing the risks of unauthorized access.
According to Rostelecom, the most popular authentication method on the public Wi-Fi platform remains SMS — chosen by 88% of users. The next most common is a phone call (11%), followed by login via the Gosuslugi profile (1%). The introduction of a new authentication method using bank IDs will provide a higher level of user experience and convenience for various user categories depending on the internet connection scenario.
Alexander Yaresko, Head of Product Management for Corporate and Government Segments at Rostelecom: “Implementing authentication via bank IDs on the public Wi-Fi platform is a solution that combines user convenience with a high level of security. We offer a wide range of authentication methods so that every user can choose the most suitable option. At the same time, security remains our top priority: all data is securely protected, ensuring confidentiality and preventing unauthorized access.”
