The Feinstra family with many children, who moved from Canada to the Nizhny Novgorod region about a year and a half ago, shared their impressions of the differences in food prices between the two countries.
In the program "We and They" (12+), head of the family Arend Feinstra mentioned that he was amazed at how much cheaper food is in Russia. According to him, while living in Toronto, they spent around 400 Canadian dollars (approximately 22,800 rubles) weekly on groceries, including diapers for children. At the same time, part of their food — vegetables and meat — they produced themselves on their farm.
After moving to the Nizhny Novgorod region, the family completely switched to purchasing food in stores. However, as Feinstra noted, even in this case, their expenses decreased almost sixfold — to 4,000 rubles a week. He added that in the future, their costs will become even lower, as they have started developing their own farm and plan to eat vegetables from their garden by mid-summer, and meat from their own farm by autumn.
Comparing prices, Arend noted that most products in Russia are noticeably cheaper. For example, a dozen eggs in Nizhny Novgorod can be bought for 125 rubles, whereas in Toronto, 12 eggs cost about 400 rubles. Milk in Russia, he said, costs approximately half as much.
However, there are exceptions. For example, butter in Canada costs 337 rubles for 450 grams, while in Russia, it’s 200 rubles for a 200-gram package. Despite this, basic products like potatoes and chicken are significantly more affordable in Russia.
Feinstra also noted that the overall quality of fruits in Russia is higher than in Canada. As a result, he estimates that a standard grocery basket in Russia costs about one and a half times less than in his native country.
