Incidents
A mass die-off of fish was recorded in the Sundovik River in the vicinity of Lyskovo in the Nizhny Novgorod region. An eyewitness posted a video from the scene in the community "Podslushano Lyskovo Live" on VKontakte.
The footage shows numerous dead fish floating on the surface of the water, belly up. Among the affected species are pike, roach, roach, and small bleak. According to local fishermen, the dead fish were found downstream from the municipal wastewater treatment plant.
Residents suggest two main hypotheses: a possible discharge of contaminated wastewater from the Lyskovo treatment plant or active algae blooms, which could reduce oxygen levels in the water. The residents have already requested clarification from the regional Ministry of Ecology.
Specialists from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Nizhny Novgorod region have been dispatched to the scene. Along with them, representatives from the environmental prosecutor’s office, Rosrybvod (Federal Fisheries Agency), the VNIIR Fishery Research Institute, and the state veterinary service of the Lyskovo district are assessing the situation.
To determine the exact cause, experts collected water samples and samples of the dead fish. Investigations are ongoing.
According to data from MUP "Biological Treatment Facilities," the source of the fish die-off is more than a kilometer from the wastewater discharge point. No dead fish were found within the water protection zone near the treatment plant itself.
Water samples from this zone have been sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The check was organized by the Lyskovo district administration following residents’ appeals.
It was previously reported that since the start of the bathing season, 30 people have drowned in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
