Residents of Verkhnyye Pëchory are already tired of complaining about the unbearable smell that envelops the district during evening and nighttime hours. While the problem can be locally addressed simply by not opening windows, in the heatwave conditions, the situation becomes a torment for the locals.
"During the day, we just keep the windows shut and close the curtains to prevent the sun from blazing in, but at night, we want to air out everything and breathe fresh air, opening all the windows — and outside, there's again the stench of sewage, it even irritates the eyes, and it’s impossible to fall asleep. What fresh air are we talking about?! We suffocate from the heat during the day and from the smell at night," explained Olga, a resident, to NI "Nizhny Novgorod."
Locals are actively discussing the situation on social media.
"Today, the smell was exceptionally strong; it’s never been like that before. I woke up around 2:45 from a sharp, pungent odor, as if a cesspool right under the window had overflowed, then gradually, the intensity lessened to what I’d call a ‘normal’ level of smell, which persists to this moment. At this rate, mass poisoning might occur," wrote Sergey Zh on a local forum.
"Yesterday around 9:30 PM, such a smell emerged in Afonino! My elderly parents can hardly tolerate the heat as it is, and now we had to close all the windows. Though it didn’t help much," said Olga.
"Protective gear is needed; in an emergency, they should be issued. Maybe I’m mistaken about the housing management providing them, but the smells are very concentrated, and breathing them without safety equipment is dangerous to health," shared Anna with her reflections.
Local residents are concerned about potential health risks and are demanding immediate action from authorities. The situation in Verkhnyye Pëchory causes alarm not only among residents but also among environmental activists. They call on officials to pay attention to the problem and take measures to protect the environment and public health.
Earlier, Russia’s Investigative Committee head Alexander Bastrykin instructed to report on the criminal case related to violations of environmental legislation in Verkhnyye Pëchory. The agency noted that residents continue to complain about an unpleasant smell, which, according to them, has been present for several years. Citizens attribute the foul odor to poor condition of engineering networks, including sewage systems, and activities of nearby industrial enterprises.
The regional Ministry of Ecology in Nizhny Novgorod announced that round-the-clock air monitoring has been initiated following complaints about the smell. A working group has been established to identify the source of the odor and propose ways to resolve the issue. Public organizations are also involved in monitoring: activists are visiting locations of complaints, communicating with residents, and taking pollutant measurements using gas analyzers.
Reports of the unpleasant odor can be made to the 24-hour environmental dispatch service at 8 (831) 433-22-11. All reports are promptly addressed.
The Nizhny Novgorod administration continues its fight against illegal cesspool trucks illegally dumping waste into storm drains. In 2025, they were fined more than 30 times.
