The residents of Nizhny Novgorod are concerned about a possible increase in the mosquito population in the near future. Social media warnings are alerting to a mass appearance of bloodsucking insects over the weekend, with peak activity expected by July 19.
According to the medical publication "Stationary-Press," cases of dirofilariasis — a disease caused by subcutaneous worms transmitted specifically by mosquitoes — have already been recorded in Moscow. These incidents occur annually but still cause concern.
Infectious disease specialist Ekaterina Kulova shared recommendations on preventing problems related to mosquitoes. It is important to use repellents, fumigators, and mosquito nets to minimize the risk of bites.
Some believe that mosquito bites are beneficial — allegedly, they refresh the blood. However, this is far from the truth. Moreover, these insects can transmit transmissible diseases.
Scratched bites can become entry points for infections, so it is crucial to monitor the hygiene of the bite area and relieve the itch.
Since the main source of parasites is domestic animals, preventive measures include deworming therapy for dogs once a month. Humans do not need to undergo deworming themselves.
Earlier, residents of Nizhny Novgorod were informed about how not to get infected with cercarial dermatitis.
NOTE:
Dirofilariasis is a naturally occurring parasitic disease affecting cats, dogs, and other animals, which can also be transmitted to humans. The disease vectors are mosquitoes that bite animals and infect humans. People of all ages can become infected. Parasites most often settle in the eyes, face, neck, torso, hands, mammary glands, and legs after a bite. Symptoms include weakness, headache, nausea, fever, and pain at the bite site. A feeling of parasite movement under the skin may also be experienced.
