"This way, we reduce the load on the road infrastructure by cooling the asphalt surface and preventing its deformation, and we maintain a normal microclimate. Currently, the air temperature in the city fluctuates from 28 degrees and above; under the scorching sun, asphalt can heat up to 60 degrees," said the mayor.

      Yuri Shalabaev added that more than 30 KDMs are involved in these operations, acquired in recent purchases of road machinery. Elena Sharofileva, the master of the municipal enterprise "Center," responsible for comprehensive street maintenance in the historic center of Nizhny Novgorod, explained that shifts now start at 7:00 a.m. and last 24 hours. Main irrigation occurs from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., but roads are also watered at night, with the equipment operating 4-5 times a day.

      "Two nozzles of the KDM are raised upwards, while the rest are directed at the road surface. This cools both the air and the asphalt. In hot weather, the load on the roads increases, and pavement subsidence can occur, leading to rutting. We prevent this with irrigation, making driving more comfortable for motorists," she explained.

      Additionally, Elena Sharofileva mentioned that road equipment regularly waters lawns to help green zones suffer less from the heat: "We irrigate lawns early in the day, after 4:00 p.m., and at night."

      According to the city guest, Sergey, high temperatures are easier to bear when there is plenty of greenery around and a sense of coolness from the moist air: "I came to Nizhny Novgorod to relax and for work. It's very nice that in such incredible heat, the roads are watered, the services operate flawlessly, and it's much easier to breathe and live in your wonderful city."
