Nizhny Novgorod is preparing for the visit of experts for the "Family Capital of Russia" competition.
September 4, 2026 17:16 Society Nizhny Novgorod is preparing for the visit of experts from the first All-Russian competition "Family Capital of Russia." Inspectors will evaluate, first and foremost, whether the city is becoming more convenient for families. They will pay attention to the availability of low-floor transport, the provision of social facilities with ramps, mother and child rooms, and play areas. Proposals from catering establishments regarding the availability of children's menus will be considered separately.
Let us remind you that the All-Russian competition "Family Capital of Russia" is held on the instruction of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, with the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation and the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives. Applications for participation have been submitted by 60 cities, with 10 locations reaching the finals, including Nizhny Novgorod. The on-site evaluation will be a decisive stage, and based on its results, the winner will be determined.
In the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Institute for Demographic Development," which coordinates the preparation for the visit, they believe that for a family, the city begins with everyday routes. General impressions are formed from the convenience of traveling to the clinic, attending school, walking in the park, or a family outing to a café. That is why the competition experts will assess not only the presence of infrastructure facilities but also how convenient they are for parents with children to use.
"In Nizhny Novgorod, low-floor buses and trams operate, allowing access to the cabin with a stroller without steps. Ramps and other elements of a barrier-free environment are used in social infrastructure facilities. Such solutions help parents with small children and people with limited mobility to move around the city more freely. Family-friendly conditions are created in public spaces, shopping centers, cafés, and other establishments. Mother and child rooms, play areas, children's chairs, and menus allow parents to spend time together without giving up their usual urban routes," said Maria Dugina, Deputy Director of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Institute for Demographic Development."
She emphasized that the fewer everyday obstacles there are, the more opportunities family members have to "use the city together."
Improving family infrastructure in Nizhny Novgorod is one of the elements of a global effort to enhance the quality of life for couples and families with children in the region. This work is being carried out by the Institute for Demographic Development and the government of the Nizhny Novgorod region as part of the "OSNOVA - Nizhny Novgorod Life Project." The main goal of the program is to make it convenient for families to live, work, raise, and educate children in the region.
Let us remind you that by the decision of the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, the Five-Year Family Initiative has started in the region (the period from 2025 to 2030-1). Residents have access to numerous regional support measures that effectively complement federal initiatives. This aligns with the goals and objectives of the national project "Family."
