Nizhny Novgorod residents were explained how to help a child get used to school.

August 31, 2026 14:50 Society The period of adaptation to school depends not only on the child's age but also on their individual psychophysiological characteristics. This was reported by the IA "Vremya N" with reference to the head of the Department of Practical Psychology at the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Education Development of the regional Ministry of Education, Elena Edyeleva. The expert explained that at the beginning of the school year, it is especially important for parents to closely monitor their children's condition, as adaptation difficulties arise not only for first-graders. According to Edyeleva, the most intense stage remains the first grade. The child has to quickly readjust: playtime takes a back seat, replaced by studies. Additionally, instead of the familiar caregiver, a new system of relationships with teachers emerges. Another challenging period, according to the expert, is associated with the transition to the fifth grade. During this time, the children's group often changes, and instead of one teacher, several subject teachers appear. Each of them has their own requirements, which also becomes a serious burden for the child. The third difficult stage, the psychologist noted, is the beginning of specialized education in high school. The main signal of adaptation problems is a noticeable decline in academic performance across all subjects. If this is accompanied by changes in behavior and withdrawal, it may indicate maladaptation. Edyeleva emphasized that in such situations, parents should not attribute what is happening to laziness. She explained that if a student is struggling with the load psychologically or physiologically, they may withdraw into themselves. In this case, it is important for adults to intervene as early as possible. If a child brings home poor grades or refuses to go to school, the specialist believes there is no need to look for blame. Instead, parents should take the child's side, show patience, and directly ask how they can help. According to Elena Edyeleva, a student who has reached the limits of their capabilities will not be able to cope with academic difficulties on their own without adult support. It was previously reported that nearly 30,000 children will be enrolled in the first grades of Nizhny Novgorod schools. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
