On August 24, 2026, at 17:05, Sports. On August 23, the VI stage of the multi-day cycling race "Russia" took place in Nizhny Novgorod. About 100 professional athletes participated in it. The distance was 60 km, and the route passed through the central streets with the crossing of the Kanavinsky Bridge.
The route of the cycling race "Russia" runs through the cities of the "Golden Ring." This is a large-scale sports project that unites professional athletes and cycling enthusiasts. It is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the famous tourist route and aims to promote domestic tourism. A total of eight stages have been organized. The total length of the distances is 504 km.
The cycling race started on May 16 in Kostroma and passed through Vladimir, Suzdal, Yaroslavl, Ivanovo, Kalyazin, and Nizhny Novgorod. After the award ceremony for the winners of the stage of the cycling race "Russia," Nizhny Novgorod handed over the symbolic relay of the competition to the Moscow region. On September 5, the sporting event will be hosted by Sergiev Posad. The final stage will take place on September 12 in Moscow on the Sparrow Hills.
On the same day as the cycling race "Russia," the "VeloNizhny" festival took place in Nizhny Novgorod, gathering about 1,600 cycling enthusiasts and held in the format of a 10-kilometer bike ride through the city's iconic landmarks. In addition, marathon runner, EMERCOM employee, and volunteer of the "More Than You Can" foundation Oleg Krasnov conducted a running tour for festival participants as part of the "Run and Listen!" project.
"In honor of the 60th anniversary of the 'Golden Ring,' ten settlements in the Nizhny Novgorod region, including the regional capital, have been included in the most famous Russian tourist route, along which the cycling race 'Russia' takes place. This weekend, Nizhny Novgorod hosted one of the stages of this large-scale sporting event, which united professional athletes and cycling enthusiasts. Guests from other regions were able not only to participate in the competitions and the 'VeloNizhny' festival but also had the opportunity to see Nizhny Novgorod's attractions, stroll through the most beautiful streets of our city, and learn interesting historical facts during the running tour. The cycling race 'Russia' is an excellent example of how sports, culture, and tourism work together," emphasized the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin.
Routes along the Golden Ring are becoming more interesting and convenient each year. As part of the national project "Tourism and Hospitality," cities are developing infrastructure, opening new locations, and creating conditions for comfortable recreation.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Sports of Russia in collaboration with the "League of Heroes" and the All-Russian Public Organization "Federation of Cycling Sports of Russia," with the support of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation and the executive bodies of the subjects of the Russian Federation that are part of the NTM "Golden Ring."
"Nizhny Novgorod provided participants with one of the most spectacular stages of the season. Such routes require maximum concentration from athletes, the ability to work in a group, and to make quick decisions during the race. At the same time, for the city's residents, this stage became a real celebration of cycling, where hundreds of enthusiasts lined up alongside the athletes at the start. It is this combination of big sports and mass events that makes the 'Russia' cycling race special and allows for the promotion of cycling throughout the country," noted the head of sports projects at the "League of Heroes," Nazariy Kolomiyets.
The winners of the Nizhny Novgorod distance of the competition were Maria Kurnosova from the Moscow region and Daniil Suchkov from Moscow.
Holding such large-scale events is an important part of implementing the state program "Sports of Russia," which, starting in 2025 at the direction of President Vladimir Putin, aims to create conditions for physical activity and improve the quality of life for Russians. Scaling sports infrastructure, engaging residents in mass events, developing children's sports, and supporting veterans of the SVO through adaptive physical culture opportunities are key tasks of the program that are currently being successfully addressed in our region.
Let us remind you that the national project "Tourism and Hospitality," initiated by President of Russia Vladimir Putin, aims to develop tourist infrastructure, train personnel, promote travel across the country, and improve service quality. Five federal projects are being implemented within its framework. The NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
