Awaiting improvement: what the 1 May Park in Kanavino looks like

      August 17, 2026 09:00 Society "What about the 1st of May Park? When will the improvement work resume?" A reader contacted the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" editorial office with this question. The thing is, the transformation of this cultural heritage site (the park next to the "Chkalovskaya" metro station is indeed such a site) was divided into three phases. The first and second phases were completed back in 2024-2025. It is currently not possible to start the final, third phase, as the authorities have yet to determine the source of funding for the work.

      During the first two phases, about 15 tons of various junk were removed from the area, and unclear structures were eliminated. The sign with the park's name, attractions, a petting zoo, and the "Upside Down House" were also removed. There were also proposals to get rid of the dolphinarium, but the public reacted negatively to this idea, so it remains for now.

      Having visited the park during the past (rainy) weekend, we confirmed: it is no longer an amusement park, but a recreational area for leisurely walks. Part of the park is fenced off. Behind the temporary fence lies an unkempt area with an abandoned pond and the building of the former tavern "Tortuga." This section is planned to be improved as part of the third phase. There are also plans to modernize the drainage system and repair the fencing. However, the timelines for implementing these plans are vague, as, as we mentioned, everything hinges on funding.
