More than 12 km of tram tracks have been reconstructed in the Lenin district.

      On August 13, 2026, at 07:11 Society In Nizhny Novgorod, the reconstruction of the tram tracks on the section from the 1st of May Park to Ak sakov Street has been completed. More than 12 km of single track were replaced here, completely renewing the rails and the contact network. The results of the work were discussed by the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin, Deputy Governor Sergey Morozov, Deputy Chairman of the Regional Government Pavel Savateev, and Director of LLC "Ecological Projects" Evgeny Grabovsky.

      Since 2022, nearly 120 km of single tram track have already been updated in Nizhny Novgorod. In the hilly part of the city, the work is nearing completion, while in the riverine part, it is planned to be finished by 2027.

      "We have completely formed the public transport framework in Nizhny Novgorod with an emphasis on electric transport. The main volume of work is undoubtedly the modernization and replacement of tram tracks. Out of 149 kilometers, 120 have already been updated. I would like to note that almost all of the 170 new trams have already been delivered, with the remaining few units arriving in the near future. After the replacement of the tracks is completed next year, there will not be a single old tram left on the streets of Nizhny Novgorod," said Gleb Nikitin.

      The head of the region compared the scale of the update to the creation of a tram network almost from scratch. At the same time, part of the tracks on the current section was laid about a hundred years ago. The reconstruction in the Leninsky district took place under difficult conditions. The tram tracks pass through residential areas and a large private sector, where the tram remains one of the most convenient modes of transport.

      "During the reconstruction, we faced a number of difficulties - the need to work in conditions of dense urban development and intersections with engineering networks," said Evgeny Grabovsky.

      According to him, additional protection for gas pipelines and other communications had to be provided on the section. The timelines were also affected by the weather and the need to coordinate work with city services. After the reconstruction is completed, the route of tram No. 417 has changed. It now runs from the Moscow Railway Station to Ak sakov Street and back.

      At the same time, the update of the tram network in the city continues. The tracks from Dubki Park to Komsomolskaya Square are currently being reconstructed, and in the Avtozavodsky district - on the sections from Sozgorod-1 to Sozgorod-2. The contractor has also begun updating the tracks from Igarskaya Street to the Northern checkpoint. In 2027, it is planned to replace the tram tracks on Kirov and Youth Avenues in the Avtozavodsky district.

      At the same time, the electric bus network is being expanded in Nizhny Novgorod. It is expected that after extending routes to new areas, the passenger flow of electric buses will increase from 12 million to 30.5 million people per year. As a result, more than 170,000 residents of new micro-districts will gain access to environmentally friendly public transport. The length of the trolleybus-electric bus network has already reached 210 km, and the coverage of routes has increased by 34%. The transition of some trolleybus routes to electric buses has saved about 4.66 billion rubles, as there was no need to modernize outdated trolleybus infrastructure. Gleb Nikitin noted that only electric buses are currently operating in the hilly part of the city. On average, a trolleybus carried about 450 passengers per day, while an electric bus carried about 700. A trolleybus traveled 150-180 km per day, while an electric bus traveled from 190 to 220 km or more. Separately, the governor spoke about the electric bus "MiNin." Thanks to overnight charging, it travels at least 240 km in the upper part of the city.

      "However, trolleybuses with autonomous operation have their advantages, so we are keeping them in the riverine part of the city and further developing them. The entire fleet there is heavily worn out, and one of the final elements of the entire program is the acquisition of new trolleybuses. I believe that we will complete this work soon," added Nikitin.

      In total, the region plans to update nearly 40 trolleybuses for operation on routes in the riverine part of the city.
