Nizhny Novgorod region is recognized among the leading regions in the development of popular science tourism. This was reported by Deputy Chairman of the Government of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov. Routes for popular science tourism are being created as part of the Decade of Science and Technology. These are structured programs that include educational and outreach activities, as well as excursions to research facilities. The routes can be viewed on the website nauka.rf. According to Dmitry Chernyshenko, about 110 routes have been created in 35 regions of the country, with more than 30 new routes appearing in 2.5 years. Among the leading regions are Nizhny Novgorod region, St. Petersburg, the Republics of Tuva, Bashkortostan, Sakha, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Stavropol Territories, and Amur, Arkhangelsk, Irkutsk, Ryazan, Samara, and Tambov regions. Valery Falkov noted that popular science tourism is developing most actively in regions with a high concentration of universities, scientific organizations, and research infrastructure. According to him, laboratories, scientific centers, observatories, planetariums, science museums, technoparks, and high-tech production facilities attract the most interest. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, there are 13 routes for popular science tourism. They cover various areas—from machine engineering and medicine to folk arts and crafts and nuclear energy. Deputy Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod region government Ekaterina Solntseva reported that the routes are formed with the possibility of practical acquaintance with science and modern technologies in mind. The region became the first to develop a route based on a new model that combines scientific and industrial tourism sites and demonstrates a complete career trajectory—from educational institution to enterprise. In 2025, Nizhny Novgorod region took first place in the nomination "Region of Popular Science Tourism" at the V All-Russian award "Regions of Tourism and Hospitality." In addition, the region was among the winners based on the results of the Project Accelerator conducted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the ANO "National Priorities" as part of the Decade of Science and Technology. This year, an interregional route has been launched involving Nizhny Novgorod region, the Republic of Bashkortostan, and Novosibirsk region. The first tourist was Evgeny Bogdashov from Zavolzhye, the winner of the federal competition "Science. Territory of Heroes." The Ministry of Education and Science of Russia regularly updates the All-Russian Register of Popular Science Tourism Sites, which includes more than 1,300 venues open to the general public. By the end of 2025, more than 440,000 people visited popular science tourism sites in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
The initiative "Popular Science Tourism" has been implemented since 2022 as part of the Decade of Science and Technology with the aim of attracting young people to the field of research and development and increasing the accessibility of information about the achievements of Russian science.
