Three territories have been named for the possible habitation of bison in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
On August 4, 2026, at 07:00, Society In the Nizhny Novgorod region, work continues on the return of the European bison. At a working meeting of the committee on ecology and natural resources of the regional Duma, possible sites for the future habitat of the animals were discussed. Participants in the meeting considered three options for territories for the placement of the future population of bison: forest areas in the Lukoyanovsky and Pochinkovsky districts with a total area of about 37 thousand hectares; plots of deciduous forests in the Vyksa and Voznesensky districts, which could provide possible migration of animals between the Nizhny Novgorod region and the Republic of Mordovia; as well as the territory of an experimental hunting farm in the Gorodetsky district. During the discussion, specialists studied the federal Strategy for the Conservation of the Bison, in which the Nizhny Novgorod region is included in the list of promising territories, as well as the regional Strategy for Biodiversity Conservation until 2034. The document provides for the creation of a free-ranging herd of bison as one of the measures for the restoration of floodplain oak forests. In addition, participants reviewed the experience of the Republic of Mordovia and the Vladimir region, where bison populations are already being restored. The speaker of the Nizhny Novgorod Duma, Evgeny Lyulin, noted that the return of the bison to Nizhny Novgorod land is not only an ecological task but also a restoration of historical justice. "Today they need a new site that will provide the animals with reliable protection and freedom of movement, and people with peace and safety," emphasized Evgeny Lyulin. Following the discussion, a decision was made to explore the possibility of expanding the national park "Nizhny Novgorod Volga named after V.A. Lebedev" by creating a new cluster that will receive the status of a federal specially protected natural area. The participants of the meeting will also need to submit proposals for selecting a specific site, after which a roadmap for the implementation of the project will be formed. It was previously reported that a new livestock complex for 625 cows was built in the village of Bolshoye Ustiniskoye in the Sharangsky district.
