Nizhny Novgorod region took 4th place in the national ranking of innovative development.

On July 30, 2026, at 16:19, the Nizhny Novgorod region took fourth place in the 11th edition of the Rating of Innovative Development of Subjects of the Russian Federation, prepared by the Institute of Statistical Research and Economic Knowledge of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The region maintained its position among the five most innovative subjects of the country along with Moscow, the Republic of Tatarstan, Tomsk region, and St. Petersburg.

The rating has been formed since 2012 based on more than 50 indicators grouped into five thematic indices. According to the results of the study, the Nizhny Novgorod region ranked second in export activity, fourth in the quality of innovation policy, and fifth in innovative activity.

Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Yegor Polyakov noted that import substitution and the creation of critical technologies require not just targeted support for scientists but the formation of a flexible and effective innovation ecosystem. According to him, the region's leadership positions in export activity and the quality of innovation management create a solid foundation for further technological development.

The high results were the result of systematic work to support scientific teams, develop rationalization activities, and accelerate the introduction of domestic developments into production.

As emphasized by the Deputy Chair of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod region Ekaterina Solntseva, an effective system for stimulating innovations has been established in the region, where research institutes and universities receive requests from enterprises in the real sector of the economy. She added that co-financing of applied developments by industrial companies and participation in technological leadership programs allow for maintaining high rates of innovation implementation.

An important role in the development of the region's innovation infrastructure is played by the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Nizhny Novgorod Scientific and Educational Center," which unites scientific organizations, businesses, and government authorities.

Director of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Nizhny Novgorod Scientific and Educational Center" Alexander Tarasenko noted that the region's entry into the ranks of innovative leaders in the country was the result of joint work by universities, RAS institutes, and industrial partners. According to him, the scientific and educational center will continue to expand support tools, including finding qualified customers and attracting federal grant funding, including through programs of the Russian Science Foundation.

Since the beginning of 2026, more than 50 projects by Nizhny Novgorod scientists have received grant support from the Russian Science Foundation. Applications are currently being accepted for the joint competition of the Russian Science Foundation and the Nizhny Novgorod region with the participation of a qualified customer. It is aimed at conducting exploratory scientific research in the interests of industrial partners, and the operator of the competition is the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Nizhny Novgorod Scientific and Educational Center."

The period from 2022 to 2031 has been declared the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia. Among its key tasks are attracting youth to the field of research and development, involving scientists in solving priority tasks for the country's development, and popularizing the achievements of domestic science.
