The Ministry of Forestry reminded about fire safety in forests before the weekend.

      The Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife Protection of the Nizhny Novgorod Region calls on residents of the region to strictly adhere to fire safety rules due to the active visitation of forests during the mass berry picking season. Protection against forest fires aligns with the goals of the federal project "Forest Conservation" under the national project "Ecological Well-Being." In the Nizhny Novgorod Region, ground and aerial patrols have been organized for the rapid monitoring and suppression of forest fires, and a video monitoring system has been deployed. At the same time, there is currently a significant increase in the visitation of forest areas due to the active gathering of wild plants, primarily berries. The increased flow of citizens into the forests directly affects the rise in the risks of forest fires, necessitating additional preventive measures and heightened responsibility from the population. According to the Ministry of Forestry, the main causes of fires in forests remain careless handling of fire, unextinguished campfires, discarded cigarette butts, and the use of open flames for cooking in unprepared places. In hot and dry weather conditions, even a minor source of fire can lead to the rapid spread of fire, causing serious damage to the forest fund, wildlife objects, and posing a threat to populated areas. The agency reported that since the beginning of the fire hazard season, seven forest fires have been registered on forest fund lands, occurring in the territories of the Varnavinsky, Vetluzhsky, Borsky, and Balakhna forestry districts. The causes are careless handling of fire by humans and dry thunderstorms.

      The Ministry of Forestry of the Nizhny Novgorod Region also reminded that a special fire safety regime continues to be in effect in the region, under which the following are prohibited:

      — visitation of forests by citizens during the IV-V class of fire hazard due to weather conditions;

      — conducting agricultural burns, lighting campfires, burning solid municipal waste, trash, grass burning, and carrying out other fire hazardous works;

      — using structures for cooking on coals.

      The regional Ministry of Forestry updates a fire hazard map daily on its website, indicating areas where forest visitation is prohibited. Under the special fire safety regime, the fines for citizens for violations can reach 50,000 rubles, for officials — 90,000 rubles, and for legal entities — 1 million rubles, not counting the obligation to pay for damages that may be caused to the forest fund. Criminal liability is also provided for the destruction or damage of forest plantations, including due to careless handling of fire (under Article 261 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

      In case of discovering a forest fire, residents of Nizhny Novgorod are asked to immediately report it by calling the direct line of forest protection: 8 (800) 100-94-00, or the regional dispatch service of the forestry: 8 (831) 430-01-23. Calls are accepted around the clock.
