The Ministry of Energy supported the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      July 20, 2026 12:07 Society The Ministry of Energy of Russia supported the inclusion of the nuclear power plant construction project in the Nizhny Novgorod region in the general scheme for the placement of electricity generation facilities in the country in 2027. This was reported by Governor Gleb Nikitin on his MAX channel. According to him, the region is striving for the construction of a nuclear power plant, but the implementation of such a project will take a considerable amount of time. The preliminary commissioning of the plant is possible in the late 2030s - early 2040s. The governor noted that even at the construction stage, the nuclear power plant will become a "driver for the region's economy," and after its launch, it will elevate the energy complex of the region to a new level and create additional opportunities for development. In addition, Nikitin called the refusal to complete the Gorky NPP at the end of the last century a mistake. In his opinion, modern nuclear power plants meet fundamentally different safety requirements, and the region needs to develop nuclear energy. "We will make every effort to rectify this mistake. I am confident that nuclear energy will thrive in the Nizhny Novgorod region!" concluded the governor. In 2025, at a meeting in the Legislative Assembly, it was mentioned that the Nizhny Novgorod authorities are working on the issue of creating a nuclear power plant in the region. Three sites are being considered for it - near Vyksa, Krasnye Baki, and the Sokolsky district. It was also reported that according to the general scheme for the placement of electricity generation facilities, 38 new power units with a total capacity of about 30 GW are planned to be put into operation in the country by 2042 - this exceeds the current installed capacity of the entire industry.
