Sorbic acid was found in butter in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

July 17, 2026 19:17 Society Specialists from the Nizhny Novgorod Testing Laboratory of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "VNIIZH" identified violations in a sample of butter examined as part of food monitoring. This was reported by the press service of the interregional office of the Rosselkhoznadzor. Laboratory tests were conducted from July 6 to July 16, 2026. Experts found a discrepancy in the fatty acid composition of the product and also detected sorbic acid in it. The laboratory explained that sorbic acid (E200) is a preservative, the use of which in butter is prohibited by the requirements of the technical regulation of the Customs Union "On the Safety of Food Products." Its presence may indicate product falsification or a violation of its production technology. Information about the research results was entered into the automated system "Vesta." In addition, the information was sent to the Rosselkhoznadzor office for the Nizhny Novgorod region and the Mari El and Mordovia republics for appropriate measures to be taken. As specialists explained, some unscrupulous manufacturers add sorbic acid to extend the shelf life of the product. It was previously reported that Rosselkhoznadzor discovered nearly 9 kg of homemade dairy products without documents at Nizhny Novgorod airport.
