Prices for products may rise in the Nizhny Novgorod region due to an increase in gasoline prices.

Rising fuel prices, long queues at gas stations, and restrictions on refueling raise concerns that the situation may also affect food prices.

      Fuel availability issues at gas stations arose back in late June. To reduce the load on gas stations in the region, a rule for even and odd days was introduced. Now, cars with license plates starting with an even number can refuel only on even dates, while vehicles with odd numbers can refuel on odd dates.

      In addition, there are restrictions on the volume of fuel at network gas stations. At Lukoil gas stations, no more than 40 liters of gasoline can be dispensed at a time, while Gazpromneft and Tatneft allow up to 30 liters. The limit for diesel fuel is up to 200 liters.

      In a conversation with KP-Nizhny Novgorod, the head of the Department of Economic Theory and Methodology at the N.N. Lobachevsky Institute of Economics, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Alexander Zolotov suggested that the cause of the shortage could be a surge in demand for gasoline, even if supply volumes were not reduced. At the same time, rising fuel prices at independent gas stations could put pressure on the prices of goods transported by road.

      "Considering the emergency measures being taken by the government at all levels, the fuel problem is losing its urgency. If this problem becomes prolonged, it will primarily affect those sectors related to the transportation of goods by road. This includes wholesale and retail trade. With the rise in diesel fuel prices, the costs for agricultural enterprises will increase," noted Alexander Zolotov.

      According to the expert's assessment, if fuel prices rise, the cost of food products could increase by 3-15%. If gasoline prices rise by 30%, this could add 1% to 4.5% to the cost of goods.

      However, such a scenario is not inevitable. As Alexander Zolotov explained, sellers may refuse to raise prices to maintain sales volumes. In addition, some transportation may be shifted from road to rail, and some carriers may switch to using gas fuel.

      "In fact, managing the structure of costs allows for offsetting the increase in one component by reducing the magnitude of others. Problems with road transport may lead to a partial shift in demand to services of other types of transportation, such as rail transport. Attempts to use the situation to raise prices for services from alternative carriers are not excluded," the expert added.

      It was previously reported that since the beginning of the year, gasoline prices in the region have risen by almost 13%.
