A call from "Gosuslugi," a car from Europe, and earnings on a cryptocurrency exchange: how Nizhny Novgorod residents were deceived last week.
In just seven days, residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region lost nearly 28 million rubles to scammers. Last week, fraudsters stole almost 28 million rubles from residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region, reported the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the region. A total of 44 crimes were registered in the region, committed using various deception schemes. Most often, the criminals used stories about "bank security service," online purchases, and additional income. One of the victims was a 53-year-old woman from Nizhny Novgorod: she received calls from alleged employees of "State Services," the Central Bank, and law enforcement agencies. Under the pretext of canceling a suspicious transaction, the woman was convinced to withdraw all her money and transfer it via an ATM to someone else's account — the damage amounted to 1,165,000 rubles. After that, communication with the "curators" ceased. In Arzamas, a 54-year-old man transferred 426,000 rubles for an alleged purchase of a car from Europe. Another victim, a 26-year-old resident of the Prioksky district, tried to earn money on a cryptocurrency exchange and ultimately transferred 1,079,500 rubles to the scammers. The police remind that employees of banks and law enforcement agencies never ask over the phone to transfer money, disclose codes, or card details, and in case of suspicious calls, one should immediately end the conversation and call the bank back independently.
It was previously reported that scammers demanded to "pay off the credit leverage," and the Nizhny Novgorod woman lost more than 3.9 million rubles.
