Fusion biopsy for prostate cancer diagnosis has been implemented in Nizhny Novgorod.

On July 1, 2026, at 16:39, Society Specialists from the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary have implemented a new method of high-precision diagnosis of prostate cancer - fusion biopsy. This was reported by the press service of the regional government. The method is used in cases where suspicious areas have been identified by MRI, but their sizes are too small for accurate diagnosis by standard methods. With the use of modern technology, 15 patients have already been examined. Gleb Khrykov, head of the 3rd ward of the NIIKO "NOKOD," noted that malignant tumor foci can be located deep within the tissues of the prostate and can be as small as a few millimeters. In such situations, a standard biopsy under ultrasound control proves ineffective, as pathological changes are not yet visible to the device and the doctor.

The special device allows for real-time merging of ultrasound and MRI images to accurately determine the tumor's location and successfully insert a needle for cell collection. "Thus, we can collect material from formations as small as 3-5 millimeters," the head clarified.

Research is being conducted at the 12th oncological urology department of the regional oncology dispensary. Here, surgical interventions are also performed using the new equipment. According to Gleb Khrykov, the device is multimodal and can be used directly during surgery. In particular, the ultrasound sensor is inserted into the abdominal cavity, allowing for the precise determination of the tumor's boundaries and its removal with minimal risks to the patient. In the past month, specialists have already performed ten such high-precision operations. The Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region emphasized that the introduction of new equipment and modern methods increases the effectiveness of the fight against oncological diseases. This aligns with the goals of the national project "Long and Active Life."

The regional oncology dispensary also noted an increase in the detection of prostate cancer in the region. In 2024, the disease was first diagnosed in about 1,500 residents, and in 2025, in more than 1,600 people. Specialists attribute this trend to an increase in oncological vigilance among doctors, the development of diagnostic technologies, and the active conduct of dispensary examinations and preventive check-ups. Earlier, we reported that residents of Nizhny Novgorod with melanoma would be able to receive mRNA vaccines for free. The NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
