Cash payments have been canceled in public transport in Nizhny Novgorod.

On July 1, 2026, only cashless payment methods will be accepted for public transport in Nizhny Novgorod. Cash payments will no longer be possible. The regional transport ministry reminded that there are several ways to pay for travel. The "Citicard" transport card is available—a contactless plastic card for payment via electronic wallet with free transfers or an electronic travel pass for the metro, trams, trolleybuses, buses, city trains, and cable cars.

Additionally, a virtual transport card is available in the "SITIKARD" app for Android devices. Payment via NFC is possible and does not require an internet connection. Passengers also have access to the resident card of the Nizhny Novgorod region with a transport application for beneficiaries, schoolchildren, and students, as well as its virtual version in the mobile app.

A single trip can be paid for with a bank card or through the Mir Pay service from an Android smartphone with a linked card. Biometric payment for single trips is available in the Nizhny Novgorod metro.

If a passenger only has cash and no bank or transport card, they can purchase a transport card for cash at distribution points. Information about these points is available on the operator's website, ASOP LLC "Citicard." Cards can also be purchased and topped up at printing kiosks and Post of Russia branches.

All transport vehicles are equipped with portable validators that enable cashless payment regardless of internet connectivity. The transport ministry explained that the refusal to sell tickets by drivers is intended to improve their working conditions. The agency noted that there is a high demand among employees for complete exclusion of communication with passengers, which is seen as a factor for comfortable work. It is expected that the transition to cashless payments will help increase the number of drivers in state enterprises. Furthermore, the maximum transition to cashless payments aims to enhance the transparency of the passenger transport market.

It was previously reported that passengers will be able to purchase transport cards for one or two trips in retail chain stores. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
