Two chess tournaments were held in Nizhny Novgorod by the senator of the Russian Federation, Sergey Karyakin.
Nizhny Novgorod was visited by a senator of the Russian Federation, multiple world champion, international grandmaster Sergey Karjakin. During the visit, he held a series of meetings and events aimed at popularizing chess in the region.
"My main mission in Nizhny Novgorod, and indeed in all regions of Russia, is the development of sports, particularly chess. And for me, Nizhny Novgorod is a special region because it was here, together with the governor, that we opened our first chess club in November 2023, which eventually grew into a huge network of federal scale," Sergey Karjakin said.
A chess tournament "Sergey Karjakin Cup" took place in the "Switzerland" park, with about 500 athletes aged from 6 to 88 years participating from 22 regions of Russia.
All winners and prize-winners received the right to play in the superfinal of the "Sergey Karjakin Cup." The top three winners among boys/young men and the holders of gold and silver medals among girls/women earned the right to participate in the international tournament "Chess Stars" in Moscow.
In addition, as part of the All-Russian tournament "Sergey Karjakin Cup," a regional stage of the State League in chess "Cup of the Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region" was held at the Corporate University of the Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region (KUPNO).
According to the results of the competitions in the standings among civil servants and representatives of corporate teams, the first place was taken by the team from Bor, the second place went to the team from Krasnobakovsky municipal district, and the third place was taken by the team from Volodarsky municipal district. Under the tournament conditions, the team from Bor will participate in the final tournament of the State League in chess in Moscow. Among government organizations, the first place was won by the sports school for chess No. 3 from Nizhny Novgorod, with the second place going to the sports school for chess No. 2 from Kstovo.
The awards were personally presented to the winners by Sergey Karjakin. The event was also attended by Alexander Kamornikov, director of the state-legal department of the Nizhny Novgorod region, and Dmitry Kabailo, minister of sports of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
"In the Nizhny Novgorod region, a whole series of chess festivals and tournaments are held annually, and a program for the development of school chess has been developed. Over the past year, the number of children engaged in this sport has doubled. Visits from guests of such scale provide local athletes with the opportunity to participate in high-level competitions. I thank Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin for his attention to our region and for conducting such wonderful tournaments," Dmitry Kabailo said.
On the same day, the legendary chess player and senator of the Russian Federation held a meeting with listeners of the educational program KUPNO "Leaders of the Nizhny Novgorod Region." During the conversation, Sergey Karjakin answered questions from project participants and talked about how gaming skills help in developing leadership qualities, how important self-motivation is in difficult life situations, and the peculiarities of working with citizens within the framework of the Federation Council's activities, among other topics.
"Chess is one of the most leadership-oriented sports that develop logical and analytical thinking, train memory and concentration, teach unconventional thinking, and most importantly, develop strategic planning. It is great that an open dialogue was held for the 'Leaders of the Nizhny Novgorod Region' by a person who knows everything about the world of chess - the legendary grandmaster Sergey Karjakin. He is known not only for his sports achievements but also for his patriotic stance and active cooperation with the Russian Military-Historical Society," noted KUPNO rector Ivan Kalmykov.
Projects for the development of chess in the subjects of the Russian Federation, which are overseen by the senator of the Russian Federation, are being implemented with the support of the "United Russia" party, the Sergey Karjakin Chess Club, and the Chess Federation of the Moscow Region.
Let us remind you that starting from 2025, a state program "Sport of Russia" has been launched in Russia by the order of President Vladimir Putin, aimed at creating and improving conditions for physical activity, popularizing mass sports, and enhancing the quality of life for Russians. The program's tasks include expanding sports infrastructure, conducting mass sports events, and encouraging residents to participate in meeting the standards of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex "Ready for Labor and Defense." Additionally, children's sports are being developed in the country, and new opportunities are being created for veterans of the SVO, aiding their resocialization through sports activities.
