Chess festival supported by LUKOIL
June 30, 2026 11:23 Society On June 27, Nizhny Novgorod hosted the "Sergiy Karyakin Cup" for the first time. The all-Russian chess tournament took place with the support of the "LUKOIL" Company. 500 participants from 22 regions of Russia played hundreds of games. The age of the athletes did not matter; only intellect was important. The oldest participant in the tournament was Evgeny Gordeev, born in 1938, while the youngest chess player was only five years old! The winners and prizewinners earned the right to play in the Superfinal of the "Sergiy Karyakin Cup," and the top three winners among boys and young men, as well as the gold and silver prizewinners among girls and young women, earned the right to participate in the international tournament "Chess Stars" in Moscow. As part of the "Sergiy Karyakin Cup," a regional stage of the competition also took place this weekend - the "Cup of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region." The 12 strongest teams from the region took to the boards. The intensity of the competition was Olympic! The team of LLC "LUKOIL-Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez" was in a tight group of leaders and, in a fierce battle, stopped just a step away from the podium, demonstrating great skill, sportsmanship, and will to win! "A huge thank you to all the organizers and, of course, to the tournament partner - the 'LUKOIL' Company. Without such significant support, our celebration would not have reached such heights. Thank you for creating the atmosphere, for the prizes, for the opportunity to bring together the chess family from all over the country!" said Tatyana Khilova, the organizational director of the Sergey Karyakin Chess Clubs.
