Substitute kidney therapy has been implemented at the Nizhny Novgorod Geriatric Center.

      On June 23, 2026, at 17:02, Society. Renal replacement therapy was implemented for the first time in the intensive care unit of City Clinical Hospital No. 3 - Nizhny Novgorod Geriatric Center. Specialized modern equipment was purchased for the application of the technology. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

      The new method has already been used to treat a patient who was admitted to the department in extremely critical condition. The woman was found to have severe decompensation of diabetes mellitus, metabolic acidosis, acute renal failure, and severe electrolyte disturbances. Such diagnoses pose an immediate threat to life.

      Specialists explain that when kidney function is impaired, the body loses the ability to excrete metabolic waste and to maintain water-salt and acid-base balance. This can lead to failures in several vital systems.

      For the team, this is an important stage of development - mastering new equipment, enhancing the competencies of specialists, and the ability to provide more modern and comprehensive medical care to patients with severe multi-organ failure, noted the chief physician of GKB No. 3, Dina Shakurova.

      The head of the intensive care unit, Anton Borisov, emphasized that the launch of renal replacement therapy contributes to increased survival rates for patients with acute renal failure and associated complications. In addition, the innovation strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration among intensivists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, and other specialists, as well as expands the experience of medical staff with high-tech equipment.

      The development of modern intensive therapy methods and the equipping of hospitals with new equipment align with the goals of the national project "Sustained and Active Life."
