The premiere of "The Princess and the Pig Keeper" took place at the Nizhny Novgorod Puppet Theater.
On June 20, 2026, at 14:00, Culture and Leisure The premiere of the play "The Princess and the Pig Keeper" (6+) based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen took place at the Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Puppet Theater. The production is a continuation of the theater's collaboration with a creative team from St. Petersburg, the regional Ministry of Culture reported.
The director of the play is Chackchi Frosnokkers, and the set designer is Ulyana Elizarova. They previously worked at the Nizhny Novgorod Puppet Theater on the play "Isergily."
The theater director Alla Zabegalova noted that the new work offers a modern stage interpretation of the well-known fairy tale and addresses themes of love, sincerity, and inner choice.
According to Chackchi Frosnokkers, the production is fundamentally different from "Isergily" and is inspired by Andersen's works. At the same time, the authors changed the ending of the fairy tale.
"We give her a chance, and this chance is dictated by Andersen himself—love. It is love that opens the heroine's heart and changes her," the director said, adding that in the new interpretation, the princess appears as an ambiguous character capable of redemption.
The theater notes that the play tells about love and the choice between external glamour and genuine feelings. According to the plot, the prince must win the heart of a girl who values artificial beauty more than sincere experiences.
The upcoming performances of the play will take place on the small stage of the Nizhny Novgorod Puppet Theater on June 28. The performance can be attended using the "Pushkin Card," which operates within the framework of the national project "Family." NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
