On June 20, 2026, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, as well as across the country, the admissions campaign for the system of secondary vocational education began. Colleges and technical schools started accepting documents from applicants, the regional Ministry of Education reported. Russian Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov noted that currently about 63% of ninth-grade graduates and 12% of eleventh-grade graduates choose to study in colleges. The total number of students in the secondary vocational education system reached 3.9 million, comparable to the figures of the RSFSR. The average competition is 3-4 applicants per place, with some institutions having up to 18 applicants per place. According to him, the development of the system is facilitated by the "Professionalitet" project, which provides for obtaining two or three professions and the participation of employers in the educational process, as well as a program for the renovation of dormitories. According to the regional Ministry of Education, in 2026, about 34,800 schoolchildren graduated from the ninth grade. More than 17,800 budget places are available for admission in regional colleges and technical schools, and nearly a thousand budget places in secondary vocational education institutions at Nizhny Novgorod universities. Compared to last year, the total number of budget places has increased by several hundred. The ministry clarified that the number of budget places is formed annually based on the needs of the region's economy, the labor market situation, demographic indicators, and recommendations from the Ministry of Education of Russia. The Minister of Education of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Mikhail Puchkov, reported that the most in-demand fields of study remain mechanical engineering and energy — chosen by about 24% of applicants. Among the popular fields are also humanitarian and pedagogical specialties, as well as the transport sector. In the region, as part of the federal project "Professionalitet" of the national project "Youth and Children," 16 clusters are operating — one educational and 15 production. In 2026, it is planned to open three more clusters, including in the field of creative industries and aircraft manufacturing. By 2027, their total number is expected to increase to 25. The national project "Youth and Children" has been implemented at the direction of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, since 2025. It includes nine federal projects and programs: "Russia — a Land of Opportunities," "We Are Together," "Russia in the World," "All the Best for Children," "Leading Schools," "Teachers and Mentors," "Creating a Network of Modern Campuses," "Universities for the Generation of Leaders," and "Professionalitet."
