The Nizhny Novgorod Zoo wanted to keep the rescued eagle forever.

On June 16, 2026, at 11:37, Society NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" - Polina Zubova. Last winter, employees of the Nizhny Novgorod zoo "Limpopo" made a troubling discovery. In one of the parking lots, they found a white-shouldered eagle, listed in the Red Book of Russia. The predator was in a synthetic bag. Upon examination, the eagle was found to have an injury to its right wing and severe exhaustion. After that, the zoo contacted Rosprirodnadzor and received permission for the temporary care and treatment of the bird.

In "Limpopo," they told NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" that making optimistic forecasts is still premature, as the rehabilitation of red-listed birds is always a lengthy and labor-intensive process. Despite the difficulties, specialists note a stable positive trend. The eagle is regularly receiving veterinary care and has fully transitioned to a daily diet. The menu for the feathered patient includes fish, quail, beef, and feed rats.

Moreover, the possibility of introducing live carp into the diet is being considered. The bird is to be gradually accustomed to hunting by releasing fish directly into the pool so that the eagle can catch food on its own. The improvement in the bird's well-being is also indicated by its behavior: lethargy and apathy have disappeared. However, the rescued eagle still spends most of its time on the ground, avoiding active flight.

"At the same time, zoo specialists are confident that the bird is not capable of existing independently in wild natural conditions. Therefore, a letter was sent to Rosprirodnadzor from the management recommending that the white-shouldered eagle be kept further in 'Limpopo.' A response to this letter has not yet been received," they added in the land of animals and birds.

Earlier, it was reported that a baby aardvark born in "Limpopo" went for its first walk. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
