Another 3.5 billion rubles have been allocated for the Nizhny Novgorod tram concession.

      June 15, 2026 18:45 Economy The regional Ministry of Transport's expenses in 2026 will increase by almost 3.5 billion rubles due to federal funding. Additional funds will be directed towards the implementation of a concession project for the modernization of tram infrastructure in Nizhny Novgorod. According to amendments preliminarily approved by the Budget Committee of the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, 3.496 billion rubles will be allocated from the federal budget. An additional 223 million rubles for the same purposes will be provided from the regional treasury as co-financing. The additional funding is related to the rise in the cost of construction materials, including tram rails, which has occurred since the project was launched. The Deputy Head of the regional Ministry of Transport, Denis Ryabinin, stated that the funds received will allow for the completion of the construction phase of the concession in 2027-2028. According to him, the modernization project for electric transport, costing 50 billion rubles, started in 2022. During this time, the cost of materials has significantly increased, making it impossible to maintain the initial parameters of the financial and economic model. Nevertheless, the majority of the work has already been completed. To date, 115 km of tram tracks have been modernized out of the planned 149 km. Additionally, new rolling stock has been almost completely purchased. Before the project is completed, several high-capacity trams need to be acquired, as well as modernization of the depot and traction substations.
