More than 4,400 drunk drivers have been caught in the Nizhny Novgorod region since the beginning of the year.

      June 13, 2026 12:11 Incidents Since the beginning of the current year, employees of the traffic police departments in the Nizhny Novgorod region have identified 4,404 drivers who were operating vehicles while intoxicated. Of these, 3,878 drivers were recognized as drunk, and 1,665 refused to undergo medical examination. As reported by the traffic police, 526 of these drivers got behind the wheel again while intoxicated, for which they face criminal liability. The regional traffic police warns drivers about the serious consequences of driving while intoxicated. For operating a vehicle while intoxicated or refusing medical examination, fines of up to 45,000 rubles and a driving ban for 1.5 to 2 years are imposed. A repeated violation may lead to criminal liability under Article 264.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation: imprisonment for up to 2 years and confiscation of the vehicle. Recall that the State Duma has adopted a bill simplifying the documentation process for identifying intoxicated drivers. Now inspectors will be able to record the removal from vehicle operation without creating numerous intermediate documents.
