A monument to the author of the judicial reforms of the 19th century will be erected in Nizhny Novgorod.

      On June 11, 2026, at 11:37, Society In Nizhny Novgorod, a monument will be erected to the statesman and former Minister of Justice of the Russian Empire, Dmitry Zamyatnin. The decision to immortalize his memory was made by the deputies of the City Duma at an extraordinary meeting on June 11. The initiative was proposed by the Main Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation for the Nizhny Novgorod region. The monument is planned to be installed in front of the building of the House of Culture named after Ya.M. Sverdlov on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, 18. During the Russian Empire, the Noble Assembly was located in this building. On December 4, 2025, the initiative was reviewed and supported by the committee for the commemoration of outstanding individuals and historical events of Nizhny Novgorod. Dmitry Zamyatnin was born on January 31, 1805, into a noble family in the ancestral estate of Pashigorevo in the Gorbatov district of Nizhny Novgorod province. He received his education at the Imperial Alexander Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. He spent the first 17 years of his service in the II Department of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery. Over the years, he held positions as herald master, a member of the Consultation, and head of the Ministry of Justice. He was appointed Minister of Justice of the Russian Empire on January 1, 1864. Zamyatnin is considered one of the key initiators of judicial reform in Russia. Under his leadership, judicial statutes were developed and implemented, enshrining the principles of judicial independence, transparency of proceedings, and the institution of jurors. At his suggestion, cruel corporal punishments were excluded from judicial sentences.
