19 "smart" traffic lights will be installed on Moscow Highway

      On May 29, 2026, 17:41 Society In Nizhny Novgorod, traffic lights are being modernized on one of the key highways - Moscow Highway. Work has already begun on the installation of 19 modern objects. This was reported by the head of the city, Yuri Shalabaev. According to him, the project is being implemented as part of the development of an intelligent transport system. The mayor emphasized that these traffic lights are the first to greet drivers entering Nizhny Novgorod from the direction of Moscow.

      Traffic in the area is always intense, the highway is extremely in demand, and issues of convenience and safety play a key role in organizing road traffic, he noted.

      Yuri Shalabaev emphasized that this is essentially a complete replacement of the existing infrastructure. The installation of new traffic lights with countdown timers, LED strips, and additional information sections is planned. All communications will be moved underground. After the work is completed, the objects will be integrated into the intelligent transport system. The mayor reminded that a phased modernization of traffic lights is underway in Nizhny Novgorod. Over the past five years, 100 objects have already been updated in the city. In the near future, a contract is planned to be signed for the reconstruction of another 14 traffic lights on Vaneeva, Vedenyapina, and South Highway streets. Engineer Dmitry Matskevich from the Municipal Institution "Traffic Organization Center of Nizhny Novgorod" reported that large-scale work on Moscow Highway became possible thanks to the national project "Infrastructure for Life." He noted that the new traffic light blocks with LED strips will be clearly visible at any time of day - both in bright sunlight and at night.

      It is important that the new traffic lights will be connected to the intelligent transport system, which will ensure safe and comfortable movement, as well as minimize time losses for drivers and pedestrians, he added.

      According to the specialist, in the future, it is planned to connect all major highways of the city to the system to ensure stable operation of the transport network. Alexander Ivanov, deputy general director of the contracting organization, reported that installation of one of the objects is currently underway on Moscow Highway: drilling has been completed, columns have been installed, embedded elements have been concreted, and pipes have been laid. In the near future, the cable will be laid and supports will be installed, after which the object will be ready for commissioning. Earlier, Yuri Shalabaev reported that in 2025, 10 traffic light objects were modernized in Nizhny Novgorod. Five of them were completed ahead of schedule: at I.I. Kiselev Square - tram No. 8, at Lyadov Square - near the "Gifts" store, at the intersections of Lyadov Square with Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and Belinsky streets, as well as on Studencheskaya Street near the Central Archive.
