Six residents of Nizhny Novgorod contracted borreliosis after tick bites.

      On May 28, 2026, at 18:07, Society reported that since the beginning of the tick activity season, 2,309 people, including 672 children, have sought medical assistance in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The appeals were registered in 49 municipalities and eight districts of Nizhny Novgorod, according to the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor.

      The highest rates of appeals were noted in the urban districts of Bor (192 cases) and Dzerzhinsk (157), as well as in the Vetluzhsky (133) and Pavlovsky (131) districts. Among the districts of Nizhny Novgorod, the leaders are Sovetsky (131), Prioksky (118), and Avtozavodsky (108).

      Six cases of tick-borne borreliosis have been recorded among adult residents of Nizhny Novgorod, as well as in the Tonkin and Balakhna districts. In all episodes, the infection occurred within the territory of the region, and the diagnoses have been confirmed in the laboratory.

      Overall, the number of appeals since the beginning of 2026 has been 1.3 times lower than the average long-term level. According to the agency, most bites occurred in residential areas—38% of cases. Another 32% of victims reported tick bites in garden and vegetable plots, 16% in forests, and 12% in parks and squares. Cases of bites in other regions have also been registered.

      Laboratories examined 3,225 ticks, of which 3,008 were removed from people. In 392 samples, which is 17.2%, pathogens of infections were found.

      Specialists identified seven ticks infected with the tick-borne encephalitis virus in Shakhunya, Bor, Sharangsky, and Uren districts. Borrelia were found in 459 ticks, Ehrlichia in 15, and Anaplasma in 104.

      Emergency prophylaxis with anti-tick immunoglobulin was administered to 405 people, of whom 395 were children. As of May 27, 9,271 residents of the region, including 989 children, have been vaccinated against tick-borne viral encephalitis. The vaccination plan completion rate is 116%.
