Nizhny Novgorod doctors saved a victim of a drone attack in Cheboksary.

On May 29, 2026, at 16:31, Society. Specialists from the Burn Center of the PIMU University Clinic saved a 39-year-old man who was injured in a drone attack in Cheboksary. The man spent 23 days in the clinic and was discharged on May 29. This was reported by the institution's press service.

Recall that immediately after the drone attack, PIMU specialists conducted an emergency telemedicine consultation, coordinated an intensive care plan, and decided to transfer the patient after stabilizing his condition. He arrived at the clinic by ambulance in medication-induced sedation and on artificial ventilation.

Doctors diagnosed the patient with thermochemical inhalation injury to the airways, second to third-degree airway burns, and poisoning from combustion products. The patient also had first-degree flame burns on the head, neck, and upper limbs, affecting approximately 5% of the body surface, and bilateral pneumonia of severe course.

His treatment included a complex of high-tech methods. The main efforts were focused on restoring independent breathing, clearing the airways of combustion products, treating burn wounds, reducing intoxication, and preventing complications from the lungs and brain, as well as combating infection.

Thermochemical inhalation injury is one of the most insidious and prognostically unfavorable injuries in fires and man-made disasters. The mortality rate in such cases remains extremely high, primarily due to the lightning-fast development of acute respiratory failure and secondary infectious complications, clarified Igor Arefyev, the chief freelance combustiologist of the Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod region, chief physician of the PIMU University Clinic, and head of the Burn Center.

The specialist added that the patient had several diagnoses, each of which separately threatened his life. Despite this, the man was not only stabilized, but his lung functions were significantly restored, and the burn wounds were completely sanitized. No systemic complications were noted.

Further rehabilitation will take place in Chuvashia. On May 29, the man was transported by air ambulance to his homeland, where an individual recovery program will be arranged for him.
