Nizhny Novgorod celebrates the 130th anniversary of the XVI All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition.
On May 28, Nizhny Novgorod celebrates the 130th anniversary of the XVI All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition - a landmark event that forever changed the appearance and status of our city.
The exhibition, held in 1896, became the only one in the country's history to receive the epithet "Great." On a vast area of 80 hectares, an entire city of 170 pavilions emerged, where the achievements of nearly ten thousand participants were explored by about a million guests.
Local historians rightly call the exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod "the showcase of Russia," as never before had the country presented itself to the world in such diversity, uniting industry, science, agriculture, and culture. The importance of the exhibition was even emphasized by the great scientist Dmitry Mendeleev, who noted that every thoughtful Russian should study it.
At the exhibition venues, the history of the future was forged: St. Petersburg designers presented the first Russian car, engineer Vladimir Shukhov amazed the public with unique steel lattice towers, and physicist Alexander Popov demonstrated the lightning detector - the predecessor of modern radio.
The cultural program was no less grand: in the art departments, works by Levitan, Polenov, and Nesterov were exhibited, and separate buildings had to be erected for Makovsky's monumental canvas "The Call of Minin" and the famous panels by Vrubel.
The legacy of the exhibition remains an integral part of Nizhny Novgorod to this day. It is embodied in the tram movement, the majestic building of the drama theater, and the famous Packhouses at the Arrow - reconstructed steel frames of the central pavilion of the exhibition, which today have turned into modern concert and exhibition venues, continuing to serve as a testament to the city's special role in the fate of the country.
The anniversary of the exhibition is an occasion to once again realize that Nizhny Novgorod has always been a place where the glory of the country was forged.
