Passenger traffic on the updated tram tracks in Nizhny Novgorod has increased by 32%.
On May 28, 2026, at 15:44, Society reported that a significant increase in passenger traffic has been recorded on the modernized sections of the tram network in Nizhny Novgorod. This was announced by the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, at a meeting of the Legislative Assembly. According to the regional head, one of the largest projects for the renewal of electric transport is being implemented in the region among non-capital subjects of Russia.
In the capital of the Volga region, 112 kilometers of tram tracks have already been built out of the planned 149. On the updated sections, passenger traffic has increased by 32%, and the speed of movement has risen by 64%.
All 144 single-section "MiNin" trams have already been delivered. Trams of the special large class are continuing to arrive—12 out of 26 units. We expect the remaining 14 by the end of the year, noted Gleb Nikitin.
The governor also spoke about the development of other areas of transport infrastructure. The extension of metro lines is ongoing. In 2025, tunneling between the "Ploshchad Svobody" and "Sennaya" stations was completed. Currently, 2/3 of the total underground work for the construction of two new stations has been completed, and the excavation on Maxim Gorky Street is continuing.
After the introduction of new cabins, the capacity of the Bor - Nizhny Novgorod cable car has doubled. Construction has also begun on another cable car across the Oka River, which will connect Lenin and Gagarin Avenues and will reduce travel time by bypassing traffic jams.
As part of the renewal of rolling stock, 245 buses have been purchased for Nizhny Novgorod and other municipalities in the region in 2025.
To achieve one of the main strategic priorities—balanced spatial development—we are utilizing all the opportunities and mechanisms provided at the federal level, summarized Gleb Nikitin.
