A 67-year-old resident of Nizhny Novgorod has been diagnosed with tick-borne borreliosis.
As of May 20, 2026, 1,522 people, including 473 children, sought medical help in the Nizhny Novgorod region due to tick bites. Cases were registered in 48 municipalities and in eight districts of Nizhny Novgorod, reported the regional Rospotrebnadzor. The highest number of requests was recorded in Bor (137), Dzerzhinsk (103), Vetluzhsky (89), and Pavlovsky (77) districts. In Nizhny Novgorod, residents of the Avtozavodsky (79), Soviet (87), and Prioksky (71) districts most frequently sought medical assistance. One case of ixodid tick-borne borreliosis was registered in a 67-year-old resident of the Tonkinsky municipal district. The attack by the infected tick occurred at the place of residence. The diagnosis was confirmed in the laboratory. Rospotrebnadzor noted that the number of requests in 2026 is 1.7 times lower than the average long-term level. Most bites occurred in residential areas—40% of cases. Another 29% occurred in garden plots, 15% in forests, and 13% in parks and squares. Cases of tick bites were also registered in other regions. A total of 2,270 ticks were laboratory tested, of which 2,103 were removed from people. 392 positive findings were detected (17.2%). Four ticks (three a week earlier) infected with the tick-borne encephalitis virus (0.1%) were found in Shakhunya, Bor, and the Sharangsky municipal district. Borrelia were found in 323 ticks (17.2%), Ehrlichia in seven (0.4%), and Anaplasma in 62 (4%). Emergency prevention with anti-tick immunoglobulin was administered to 312 people, including 303 children. As of May 20, 9,071 residents of the region have been vaccinated against tick-borne viral encephalitis, including 983 children. The acaricide treatment period has begun in the region. As of the specified date, treatments have been conducted over an area of 1,544.306 hectares. It was previously reported that a high risk of encephalitis infection has been recorded in 15 territories of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
