The first tournament in military-applied sports among Sunday schools took place in Dzerzhinsk.

      On Sunday, May 17, 2026, our city hosted the first tournament in military-applied sports among teams from Sunday schools. The venue was the territory of the Great Anthony Church and the adjacent "Victory Park." The organizers aimed to make the competition as engaging as possible: from drill training to crossing a simulated river.

      Who organized the tournament

      The initiator and organizer of the event was the Dzerzhinsk city organization of the Russian Union of Veterans of Afghanistan and the Special Military Operation, with the support of the Voskresensky district of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. Thus, the tournament combined the experience of military personnel and the spiritual mentorship of the Church.

      Participants and program

      A total of 5 teams in the age group of 9-11 years participated in the tournament. They were to go through stages in five types of team competitions, as well as one individual championship for team captains. But first, there was a general assembly. At it, Father Vyacheslav blessed the participants of the competition, and the tournament organizers introduced the judging panel. Then a draw took place, and the teams dispersed to their stages.

      What the teams did

      Some began the competition with a drill and song review, demonstrating their drill training skills to the judges. Others started with an obstacle course, which included a firing line and grenade throwing. The kids had to carry boxes of ammunition, bandage an injured comrade, and then the whole team had to cross a river using a rope crossing. Some teams went to written contests: knowledge of traffic rules, the history of icons of Russian Orthodoxy. Others had to show strength and team spirit in a tug-of-war.

      Results and awards

      After a tense day, the teams went to the church's refectory for a meal, while the judging panel began to tally the results. No team left without prizes or certificates: everyone managed to take prize places in various types of competitions.

      The day concluded with a group photo session against the backdrop of the Great Anthony Church. The organizers have already stated that they hope to make the tournament an annual event. Marina FEDOROVA.
