A new way to pay for travel has appeared in the Nizhny Novgorod metro.
May 18, 2026 17:51 Society Since May 18, a new payment method for travel using the "Geopay" service has become available at all stations of the Nizhny Novgorod metro. The solution allows passengers to pay for their trip without cash and without tapping a bank card to the terminal—just a smartphone with internet access is enough. A tripartite agreement on the development of digital payment services in public transport was signed during the CIPR conference (12+). The technological partner of the project is the mapping service 2GIS. Payment is made according to the approved regulated fare for a single trip. To do this, the user needs to choose a convenient method in the app: build a route, open the "Travel" menu, or go to the profile—payment with any bank card is available in each of these sections. After the payment is made, the app generates a QR code, which is valid until the end of the current day and can be used at any time. At the metro station turnstile, the smartphone screen with the QR code must be brought close to the reader on the side panel. After that, a green arrow will appear on the display, and a green signal will light up on the turnstile, allowing passage. The Minister of Transport and Highways of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Leonid Samukhin, noted that the authorities are striving to expand payment methods to enhance passenger comfort. According to him, metro users no longer need to spend time searching for and tapping their card, which reduces the time spent passing through the turnstiles, decreases queues, and makes trips more convenient.
