Nizhny Novgorod residents were told why a fan can be harmful in the heat.
May 18, 2026 18:20 Society A fan in hot weather can not only fail to alleviate the condition but also harm the skin. This was discussed by the editor-in-chief of the medical publication "Stacionar-Press," Alexey Nikonov, on his Max channel. He reminded that in Nizhny Novgorod this week temperatures are expected to reach +29…+30 degrees — an abnormally high temperature for the end of May. Doctors remind us of basic rules that can help endure the heat more easily. Specialists advise reducing the intake of heavy protein foods, especially meat, and focusing on carbohydrates and live fiber — vegetables and fruits. It is better to eat more frequently but in small portions. It is important to increase fluid intake: pure or mineral water, water with lemon, mint, or basil, as well as unsweetened fermented milk drinks are suitable. Sweetened carbonated water is better to exclude. A simple indicator of dehydration remains the color of urine. If it is dark, you need to drink 2-3 glasses of water immediately. If a person stops sweating in the heat — this is a worrying sign of a possible heat stroke and a reason to urgently seek medical help. Special attention should be paid to the intake of medications. Diuretics accelerate dehydration, beta-blockers reduce the heart's ability to pump blood to the skin for cooling, and some antidepressants suppress sweating. During heat waves, doctors recommend consulting a specialist about possible adjustments to dosage or intake regimen. Alexey Nikonov particularly highlighted the so-called fan paradox. If the room temperature exceeds +35°C, a regular fan without air humidification starts to work "like a hairdryer": it does not cool but dries out and literally "burns" the skin. In such conditions, it should only be used together with humidification — spraying water or using damp towels. This helps create an evaporative cooling effect. Earlier, the doctor discussed what infections Nizhny Novgorod dacha owners might catch. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
