Approved layout for the Eastern bypass of Nizhny Novgorod near the village of Nikulskoye.

      On May 5, 2026, at 12:41, the Nizhny Novgorod city administration approved the planning project for the Eastern bypass of Nizhny Novgorod. This concerns a section in the northeastern direction from the village of Nikulskoye in the Kstovo district. The adopted document includes the reconstruction of the road section from Afonino to Nikulskoye. The implementation of the project is provided for in the region's socio-economic development strategy until 2035 and the territorial planning scheme of the region.

      The bypass project consists of three key parts. The first involves the modernization of the existing road within the village of Nikulskoye to bring it in line with the requirements for public transport movement. The second part concerns the reconstruction of the embankment road of the rowing canal—from the area of house No. 459 in the settlement of Podnovye to the junction with Lysogorskaya Street. The third part is the construction of a new road section with a two-level interchange that will run above the regional highway "Nizhny Novgorod - Kstovo."

      When developing the reconstruction project in the area of the village of Nikulskoye, specialists considered five routing options. Transport connections between settlements, prospects for residential development, as well as existing industrial and utility facilities were taken into account. As a result, an option was chosen that will ensure safe access to new residential areas, industrial zones, and the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station. The project also includes environmental solutions: noise protection screens are planned to be installed along residential houses, and stormwater will be treated at special facilities.

      Acting Deputy Prime Minister Pavel Savateev emphasized that the interests of local residents were taken into account during the development. According to him, the project will not only relieve the roads but also reduce the negative impact on the village. "The stormwater treatment system, noise protection screens, and thoughtful traffic organization— all of this is already laid out in the project from the start," he noted, adding that the approval of the documentation creates a legal basis for moving on to the design and construction phases.

      Let us remind you that the need for the construction of the Eastern bypass is related to the constant growth of transport load in the direction of "South - North." The existing highways, including the federal routes M-7 and R-158, as well as the Bor bridges—the only bridge crossing over the Volga in the region—are operating at high capacity.
