Nizhny Novgorod residents were explained how to identify an emergency tree in their yard.

April 30, 2026 09:00 Society April's weather surprises in the form of snow and strong winds have led to trees falling on parked cars in some central regions. 360.ru found out how to identify potentially dangerous trees in advance, who is responsible for their removal, and how to properly organize this process.

How to identify a hazardous tree

Hazardous trees can be recognized by several visual signs:

      - Strong tilt of the trunk: if the tree is tilted more than 45-50 degrees, this is a clear sign of its hazard.

      - Root damage: if the roots of the tree are damaged or their breaks are visible, this can lead to the tree falling.

      - Dead branches: large branches without buds and leaves indicate that the tree is in poor condition.

      - Bark damage: partial absence of bark or its damage may indicate problems with the tree.

      - Cavities or cracks: large cavities, cracks, and splits on the trunk of the tree can make it vulnerable to external influences.

Housing and communal services expert and public figure Dmitry Bondar emphasized that these signs may indicate that the tree may not withstand loads, such as a snow cap formed due to weather conditions.

Who is responsible for hazardous trees in yards

Managing companies or homeowners' associations (HOAs) should monitor the condition of trees in yards and organize their removal. They are required to conduct regular inspections of trees at least twice a year - in spring and autumn. However, according to Bondar, such monitoring should be more frequent, for example, weekly.

If a janitor notices a potentially dangerous tree while cleaning the area, he must draw up an inspection report. Then, the managing organization interacts with the municipality to obtain a felling permit, which allows for the tree's removal. The felling permit contains deadlines by which the hazardous tree must be removed.

If the tree poses an immediate threat of falling, it should be promptly cordoned off and cut down.

Where to report a hazardous tree

Every owner can influence the condition of common property. If you notice a potentially dangerous tree, you can submit a request to the managing company. This can be done through the "Gosuslugi Dom" app or in person.

It is not necessary to unite with neighbors to submit a request. As an owner, you are responsible for the preservation of common property and should assist the organizations that service it.

What trees should grow in yards

In Russia, there are sanitary norms regulating the planting of trees in yards. There should be at least five meters from the walls of a residential building to the trunk of the tree to avoid violating sunlight access. Tree roots can reach the foundation and destroy it, so it is important to adhere to these norms.

Tall trees, such as birches and pines, are better planted in parks and other specially designated areas. Near apartment buildings, it is better to choose low-growing trees and shrubs. This is not only beautiful but also beneficial for health, especially if any of the residents have allergies to flowering.

What to do in case of violation of sanitary norms

If parking spaces or playgrounds are located in violation of sanitary norms, residents can engage in dialogue with the managing organization or the house council. They can propose their options or request options from the managing organization.

The appeal can be submitted in free form. It is important that the request comes from the residents, as conscientious organizations are interested in their proposals.
