April 24, 2026 17:40 Society On April 23, a meeting of the board of trustees for the revival of the Sarov and Diveyevo monasteries took place in Moscow, chaired by the first deputy head of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, Sergey Kiriyenko. The Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Secretary of the regional branch of "United Russia," Gleb Nikitin, participated in the discussion. He spoke about the implementation of activities within the "Arzamas – Diveyevo – Sarov" cluster program.
The meeting participants summarized interim results and discussed further plans for the development of the area. Among those present were Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, Metropolitan of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas Georgy, and other representatives of government, business, and public organizations.
The head of the Nizhny Novgorod Metropolis spoke about the restoration of churches. Work is underway in Arzamas and its surroundings, including in the churches dedicated to the icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring" and the Smolensk icon of the Mother of God. The restoration of the Trinity Church in the village of Vtorusskoye is partially completed, and work is planned for the second half of 2026 on the wooden Church of the Resurrection of Christ in the village of Kostylyakha. In Diveyevo, a dining hall for pilgrims with a capacity of 500 is planned to open in July, while the restoration of the monastery buildings continues in Sarov.
In his speech, Gleb Nikitin emphasized the development of infrastructure. In particular, a children's clinic of Clinical Hospital No. 50 of the FMBA of Russia has been opened in Sarov, with a road leading to it. In the Diveyevo district, repairs and reconstruction of two schools are underway, and a sports ground has been established in the village of Satis near the boarding school.
In Arzamas, large-scale landscaping continues. In 2025, traffic was opened on the overpass over the railway tracks towards the village of Vyyezdnoye, and the 66 km section of the R-158 highway "Nizhny Novgorod - Saratov" has been expanded to four lanes. A new public space, "Gaidar Pond," has been created in the city, with its opening scheduled for May, and the reconstruction of the water tower with an elevator and observation deck is ongoing. Over three years, more than 290 building facades and about 3.5 km of fencing have been renovated in the historic center.
"As a result of all the transformations, the city has become a point of attraction for tourists. Already now, both the residents of Arzamas and its guests can see how much it has transformed! 55 hectares of public spaces have been improved, and this work continues," noted Nikitin.
The governor pointed out that the development of the cluster has given an impulse to the economy: in 2025, three hotels, 17 catering establishments, souvenir shops, and a crafts fair opened in Arzamas, creating more than 200 jobs.
The project for the development of the pilgrimage-tourism cluster includes 183 activities, of which 123 have already been implemented, and another 32 are in progress.
