      On April 17, 2026, 19:32 Society In the first quarter of 2026, more than 639,000 attempts by users to access phishing and fraudulent websites were prevented in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Over three months, specialists identified more than 208,000 emails with malicious or unwanted content. At the beginning of the year, attackers did not limit themselves to old schemes and actively implemented new attack scenarios. Multi-step methods were increasingly used: correspondence began in email and then moved to messengers, complicating the detection of threats. As reported by the head of the email threat protection group, Andrey Kovtun, at the end of 2025, specialists recorded a wave of targeted attacks on medical institutions. Emails were sent allegedly on behalf of insurance companies or hospitals and contained patient complaints or requests for urgent hospitalization. The sender domains were made to closely resemble real ones. By February 2026, similar schemes began to be used against industrial enterprises. Messages were disguised as notifications about violations detected during transport inspections. In the attached archives, instead of documents, there was a backdoor called BrockenDoor, which allowed attackers to gain remote access to systems and steal data. Additionally, at the beginning of the year, organizations faced mailings allegedly from the tax service. In just one month, specialists discovered more than 1,600 such emails. There was also a noted increase in scam mailings offering to participate in surveys. The links in them led to fake "raffles," aimed at extorting cryptocurrency. Nearly 40,000 such messages were blocked in the quarter. Nizhny Novgorod residents are urged to exercise caution when clicking on links, not to enter personal data on suspicious resources, and to use reliable protection tools.
